How to Open a Business Bank Account: A Step-by-Step Guide

Sep 1, 2026 | 5 Minute Read

Opening a business bank account is an important step in separating your business finances from your personal finances. The right account can help you manage day-to-day expenses, track business income, pay bills, accept and send payments, and access digital tools designed to support your business.

At Yakima Federal, Advantage Business Checking is designed for eligible small businesses that need practical banking tools, local support, and a service package that fits their level of account activity.

This guide explains how to open a business bank account, what documents you may need, what information about ownership to prepare, and how to choose the right business checking account for your needs.

Step 1: Determine Whether a Business Bank Account Is Right for Your Business

A business checking account is designed to help keep business finances organized and separate from personal banking. Depending on your needs, a business account may help you:

  • Keep business income and expenses in one place
  • Monitor your business cash flow
  • Pay bills and manage vendors
  • Send invoices and receive customer payments
  • Give authorized employees access to specific banking services
  • Access a business debit card
  • Use digital banking tools to manage your account
  • Maintain clearer records for your business finances

Before opening an account, it is also important to consider your expected banking activity. Think about how often you expect to make deposits, write checks, complete transactions, use cash, or need digital payment tools.

Step 2: Choose the Right Business Checking Package

Yakima Federal offers Advantage Business Checking, with three service packages: Essential, Plus, and Elite.

Choosing the right package starts with understanding how your business operates today. Consider your expected number of monthly transactions, whether you need online banking, and whether your business may benefit from additional services.

Essential Package: Free Small Business Checking

The Essential Package is Yakima Federal’s free small business checking option, with a $0 monthly fee and no minimum balance requirement.

It may be a good fit for:

  • Startups
  • Side businesses
  • Businesses with lower transaction activity

The Essential Package includes:

  • Free business debit card
  • 100 free transactions per month
  • No minimum balance requirement
  • Business Online Banking available for $15 per month
  • Zelle® for Small Business available with Online Banking

Yakima Federal business bank account provides banking tools and services designed for eligible small businesses.

It includes:

  • Free Business Online Banking

  • 200 free transactions per month
  • Zelle® for Small Business

Optional services include CashFlow Central, Clover Merchant Services, and Positive Pay.

This package may be a good fit for a business that has more regular account activity and relies on digital banking tools.

Elite Package: For Higher-Activity Businesses

The Elite Package has a $25 monthly fee, which is waived with a $10,000 daily balance.

It includes:

  • Free Business Online Banking
  • Free business debit card
  • 300 free transactions per month
  • Zelle® for Small Business
  • Free currency exchanges

Optional services include CashFlow Central, Clover Merchant Services, and Positive Pay.

The Elite Package may be a better fit for an eligible business with higher transaction activity or greater banking needs.

Step 3: Gather the Required Documents

Preparing your information before your appointment can help make the account-opening process smoother.

Be prepared to provide:

  • A valid government-issued ID for all account signers
  • Your business Tax Identification Number, such as an EIN or SSN
  • An initial deposit to fund the account

The documents required may vary depending on how your business is legally organized. For Instance:

Sole Proprietor or DBA

  • SSN or TIN
  • Proof of registration with the State Department of Revenue

Limited Liability Company (LLC)

  • EIN or TIN of the LLC
  • Operating Agreement
  • Certificate of Formation

Partnership

  • EIN or TIN of the partnership
  • Partnership Agreement

Not-for-Profit Organization

  • EIN or TIN of the organization
  • Organization Agreement

Corporation

  • EIN or TIN of the corporation
  • Articles of Incorporation

Depending on your business structure, ownership, or regulatory requirements, additional documentation may be required.

Step 4: Prepare Your Ownership and Account Authorization Information

Before opening a business bank account, you should know who will be authorized to act on behalf of the business.

This may include:

  • Account signers
  • Business owners or other individuals with ownership interests
  • Individuals who will administer Business Online Banking
  • Employees or other authorized individuals who may receive a business debit card

For organizations and corporations with a board of directors or other governing board, Yakima Federal may require documentation showing that the banking relationship has been properly authorized.

This may be documented through board meeting minutes or a formal board resolution. The authorization should identify:

  • Approval to establish accounts with Yakima Federal Savings & Loan
  • Individuals authorized to sign on the account
  • Business Online Banking administrator(s)
  • Individuals authorized to receive a business debit card and associated limits

Step 5: Schedule an Appointment With Yakima Federal

Once you have selected a package and gathered your documents, contact your local Yakima Federal branch to schedule an appointment with a Branch Banking Specialist. During the account-opening process, Yakima Federal will review your business information, expected account activity, and banking needs to help determine the appropriate account setup.

Step 6: Set Up Business Online Banking

After your business account is opened, you may want to set up Business Online Banking.

Business Online Banking allows eligible business customers to:

  • Monitor account balances
  • Transfer funds
  • Approve transactions
  • Manage user access

The business designates an Admin User who controls access for additional employees.

Business Online Banking is separate from Personal Online Banking. If a business owner already uses Yakima Federal’s Personal Online Banking, a separate Business Online Banking profile is needed to access business accounts.

Depending on the package you choose, online banking may be included or available for an additional monthly fee.

Step 7: Add the Business Services You Need

After opening your account, you can explore optional services based on how your business manages money.

Manage Bills and Invoices With CashFlow Central

CashFlow Central is a cash management tool available through Business Online Banking that helps businesses manage both sides of their payment activity. For accounts payable, businesses can enter or upload bills, schedule payments, track payment status, and maintain vendor records. For accounts receivable, users can create and send invoices, track invoice payment status, and receive payments directly into a bank account.

Accept Payments With Clover Merchant Services

Businesses that need to accept customer payments can explore Clover Merchant Services.

Clover offers point-of-sale tools that can help businesses:

  • Accept credit and debit cards
  • Accept tap-to-pay and mobile wallet payments
  • Track sales and inventory
  • Manage employees
  • Access sales and performance information

Clover pricing may include monthly fees and per-transaction charges, with pricing determined by Clover. Businesses can apply for Clover through Business Online Banking.

Consider Positive Pay for Additional Fraud Prevention

Positive Pay is a fraud-prevention service designed to help businesses protect their checking accounts from certain unauthorized or fraudulent check and ACH transactions.

The service compares transactions presented for payment against information previously authorized by the business. Items that do not match may be flagged for review.

Positive Pay has a $35 monthly service fee and requires businesses to actively review exception items and follow applicable service requirements. During the account-opening process, customers can decide whether to enroll in Positive Pay.

Step 8: Set Up Business Debit Cards and Authorized Access

Yakima Federal offers business debit cards for eligible business customers. Debit cards may also be issued to authorized individuals who are not account owners or signers. Those cardholders have access to their own card information and transactions, but not general account information.

The business establishes individual cardholder limits when the application is completed. This can help a business provide employees with the access they need while maintaining control over card usage.

Whether you are launching a startup, managing a side business, or looking for banking tools to support a growing business, your local Yakima Federal Branch Banking Specialist can help you understand your options.
